FICO Score is A three-digit credit score (300-850) from Fair Isaac Corporation, used by most lenders to assess credit risk.

FICO score is the credit score model produced by Fair Isaac Corporation. It is a number between 300 and 850 (higher is better) summarizing your credit history. Most US lenders rely on FICO scores or a close variant.

How equipment lenders use FICO

FICO drives credit tier. Equipment lenders typically segment programs:

  • Excellent (720+): best rates, lowest down payment, longest terms
  • Good (680-719): standard rates and terms
  • Fair (640-679): higher rates, some lenders limit terms
  • Challenged (below 640): sub-prime lenders only, higher rates and shorter terms, may require larger down payment

Personal vs business FICO

Equipment financing terminology is mostly settled across the industry, but a handful of terms carry meaningful borrower implications that depend on context. FICO Score is one of them.

The concept itself is consistent. The way different lenders apply it in their documents varies. The way it affects you as a borrower depends on the specific contractual language in your deal, not the general definition.

What is an EFA loan?
An Equipment Finance Agreement (EFA) is a structured equipment loan with a $1 buyout at the end of term. Functionally identical to a loan for tax purposes (you depreciate and own the equipment), but documented as a finance agreement. Most common structure for buyers planning to keep equipment past the financing term.
What happens if I miss a payment?
A 10-day late payment typically triggers a late fee of 5 to 10 percent of the payment amount. Some contracts also trigger default interest, jumping the rate by 4 to 6 points until the account cures. Repeated late payments can trigger acceleration of the balance and equipment repossession.
How does Section 179 work?
Section 179 lets you deduct up to $1.16 million (2024 limit, indexed annually) of qualifying equipment in the year placed in service, rather than depreciating over 5 to 7 years. Equipment must be placed in service before December 31 of the tax year, used more than 50 percent for business, and financed through a qualifying structure (loan or EFA, not operating lease).
Can I refinance an equipment loan?
Yes. Equipment refinancing is common when rates have dropped meaningfully since the original loan, when the equipment has built equity supporting cash-out, or when the original lender relationship has issues. Standard equipment refi is similar to a new equipment loan with the existing equipment as collateral.
Can I finance equipment under my LLC?
Yes, and most equipment financing is done through business entities (LLC, S-corp, C-corp). The principal personal guarantee makes the credit profile of the LLC owners relevant. Single-member LLCs underwrite similarly to sole proprietorships.
Do I need business credit to finance equipment?
No, personal credit is typically the primary factor for small and mid-size businesses. Business credit (D&B PAYDEX, Equifax Business, Experian Business) matters more on larger transactions and for established businesses. Building business credit over time supports better terms on subsequent deals.

If You are planning a Section 179 election close to year-end
Then Confirm placed-in-service date can be hit before December 31. Equipment ordered but not delivered/commissioned does not qualify for current-year §179, regardless of payment status.
If Your equipment is part of a larger build-out project
Then Get bundled financing across the full project (equipment + infrastructure + integration) on single paper when possible. Bundled programs typically beat piecemeal financing on rate and approval probability.
If You are taking a Section 179 election this tax year
Then Use a loan or $1 buyout EFA. Operating lease structures do not qualify for §179 election. Confirm equipment placed in service before December 31.
If You plan to cycle equipment every 36 to 48 months
Then A true operating lease with FMV residual often beats loan or EFA structures. The lower payment over a shorter term, with return option at the end, fits the use case.
If You have a signed customer contract that the equipment will fulfill
Then Include the contract in the application. Contract-backed equipment finance typically prices 50 to 150 basis points better than capacity-build financing on equivalent credit.

What actually happens day-by-day, from application to equipment in service. Most buyers underestimate one or two of these steps; knowing them up front prevents surprises.

Wide range depending on equipment type. In-stock equipment delivers in days. Custom-configured manufacturing equipment runs 8-16 weeks. Imported equipment runs 12-24 weeks.
Apportioned plate registration (trucking)
2 to 4 weeks
New-authority trucking operators need apportioned plates before crossing state lines. Plan this into the funding timeline; temporary trip permits bridge the gap at higher per-state cost.
Wire transfer cutoff times
Typically 2-3pm PT / 5-6pm ET
After cutoff, wire processes next business day. Late-Friday signings often delay funding until Monday or Tuesday.
