Credit Tier

Soft-pull, no credit impact 22 equipment categories 24-72hr decisions $0 cost to apply
Definition

Credit Tier is A category lenders use to bucket borrowers by credit profile, typically based on FICO score.

Credit tier is the bucket a lender places you in based on your credit profile. Each tier maps to a specific rate range, term range, and down-payment requirement.

Standard tier definitions

Tier FICO Typical APR Typical term Typical DP
Excellent 720+ 6.9-9.9% 60-84 mo 0-10%
Good 680-719 9.9-13.9% 48-72 mo 5-15%
Fair 640-679 13.9-17.9% 36-60 mo 10-20%
Challenged below 640 17.9-24.9% 24-48 mo 15-30%

These are blended ranges across our partner lenders as of 2026. Your actual tier and rate depend on the specific lender’s program.

Other tier factors

FICO is the primary input but not the only one. Lenders also consider:

  • Time in business
  • Monthly revenue
  • Industry (some industries are restricted)
  • Business credit (Paydex score)
  • Public records (bankruptcies, tax liens)
  • Asset value (the equipment itself)

Moving up tiers

Most credit-tier improvements take 6-24 months: pay off revolving balances, dispute errors, build tradelines, time-out old negative marks. If you are currently in Fair or Challenged, the rate difference of moving up one tier can be $5,000-$20,000 of interest savings on a $100,000 5-year loan.

What this means in practice

The practical importance of Credit Tier

Equipment financing terminology is mostly settled across the industry, but a handful of terms carry meaningful borrower implications that depend on context. Credit Tier is one of them.

The concept itself is consistent. The way different lenders apply it in their documents varies. The way it affects you as a borrower depends on the specific contractual language in your deal, not the general definition.

The three places this term appears

This term has both a general definition and a lender-specific application. The general definition is what is above. The lender-specific application is what shows up in your particular transaction documents, and that is where the contractual implications live.

Treat the general definition as the starting point and the funding documents as the controlling text. Where the two differ, the documents win.

Where borrowers commonly get this wrong

Borrowers most often misread this term by treating it as boilerplate that follows market convention. In practice, lender-specific application varies enough that two transactions with the same labeled provision can produce different outcomes. Read your specific document language; do not assume convention.

Quick answers

Direct answers to the questions we hear most on credit tier applications. Each answer is one we have given to a real buyer in the last quarter.

Does the equipment loan get reported to credit bureaus?
Most equipment loans report to business credit bureaus (D&B, Equifax Business, Experian Business). Personal guarantees may or may not report to personal credit bureaus depending on lender practice; this is an important question to ask if maintaining personal credit utilization is important.
What is an EFA loan?
An Equipment Finance Agreement (EFA) is a structured equipment loan with a $1 buyout at the end of term. Functionally identical to a loan for tax purposes (you depreciate and own the equipment), but documented as a finance agreement. Most common structure for buyers planning to keep equipment past the financing term.
What is the typical APR on equipment financing?
Standard prime credit equipment financing runs 7 to 11 percent APR depending on equipment type, term length, and lender. Mid-tier credit runs 9 to 13 percent. Specialty programs for credit-challenged or startup borrowers run 12 to 18 percent. Manufacturer captive promotional financing can run 0 to 6 percent.
Can I pay off my equipment loan early?
Yes, but many equipment loans carry pre-payment penalties in the first 12 to 36 months. Standard structures range from 3 percent of the payoff in year one declining to zero by year three. Some loans are open pre-payment with no penalty. Read the contract before signing if early payoff is likely.
Can I finance equipment under my LLC?
Yes, and most equipment financing is done through business entities (LLC, S-corp, C-corp). The principal personal guarantee makes the credit profile of the LLC owners relevant. Single-member LLCs fit similarly to sole proprietorships.
How much down payment is typical?
Standard programs run 0 to 10 percent down on new equipment for established businesses with prime credit. 5 to 20 percent down on used equipment. 15 to 30 percent on credit-challenged or startup applications. Fleet and replacement deals often qualify for zero down.

How we structure financing

The financing structure that fits depends on the actual situation. Below are the most common decision branches we walk through with buyers, in plain "if X, then Y" form.

If You plan to cycle equipment every 36 to 48 months
Then A true operating lease with FMV residual often beats loan or EFA structures. The lower payment over a shorter term, with return option at the end, fits the use case.
If You are buying used equipment over 7 years old
Then Plan for shorter financing terms (36 to 48 months instead of 60 to 72) and higher rates. Authorized refurbished equipment from OEM-direct programs sometimes qualifies for new-equivalent terms.
If You are buying equipment from a private seller
Then Use a title services provider or escrow for the title transfer. We will not fund until title is clear; an escrow arrangement protects both buyer and seller during the title transfer window.
If You expect to pay the loan off within 12 months
Then Check the pre-payment penalty before signing. Standard structures penalize early payoff in year one. Open pre-payment loans cost slightly more in stated rate but eliminate the penalty.
If You have a signed customer contract that the equipment will fulfill
Then Include the contract in the application. Contract-backed equipment finance typically prices 50 to 150 basis points better than capacity-build financing on equivalent credit.

Timeline expectations

What actually happens day-by-day, from application to equipment in service. Most buyers underestimate one or two of these steps; knowing them up front prevents surprises.

Application submission to decision
24 hours to 5 business days
App-only programs decision same-day or next-day. Full-financials programs run 3-5 business days as the file moves through credit, then operations.
Apportioned plate registration (trucking)
2 to 4 weeks
New-authority trucking operators need apportioned plates before crossing state lines. Plan this into the funding timeline; temporary trip permits bridge the gap at higher per-state cost.
Decision to document signing
1 to 3 business days
Borrower review and signing of credit documents and personal guarantee. Most delays here are borrower-side rather than lender-side.
Wire transfer cutoff times
Typically 2-3pm PT / 5-6pm ET
After cutoff, wire processes next business day. Late-Friday signings often delay funding until Monday or Tuesday.
Refinancing existing equipment loan
2 to 4 weeks
Refinancing requires payoff of existing loan, UCC release from prior lender, and funding of new loan. The UCC release coordination drives most of the timing.
Placed-in-service date documentation
Same-day as commissioning
For Section 179 and depreciation purposes, the placed-in-service date is when the equipment is delivered, installed, and operationally ready. Document this date carefully for tax purposes.
