Soft Pull is A credit check that does not affect your credit score and does not show as a hard inquiry on your report.

A soft pull (also called a soft inquiry) is a credit check performed by a lender or service that does not affect the consumer’s credit score. Soft pulls do not appear as inquiries on the consumer-facing credit report (though they are visible on the lender-side report).

Soft pulls return your FICO score, recent inquiries, and a summary of trade lines. They do not return the full credit report; that requires a hard pull with FCRA-compliant consent.

Watch for misleading “soft pull” claims

Some lenders advertise “soft pull only” but trigger a hard pull during full underwriting. Always read the credit-authorization language carefully. Honest disclosures will say “soft-pull pre-qualification only; hard pull required for funding.”

The term shows up in three places in most equipment financing transactions. First, at the application stage, where the lender uses the concept to assess the deal. Second, in the funding documents, where it appears as a specific provision tied to the lender obligations or the borrower obligations. Third, at term end or in the event of restructure or refinance, where the term governs how the deal unwinds.

How fast can I get funded?

Do I need business credit to finance equipment?
No, personal credit is typically the primary factor for small and mid-size businesses. Business credit (D&B PAYDEX, Equifax Business, Experian Business) matters more on larger transactions and for established businesses. Building business credit over time supports better terms on subsequent deals.
Is equipment financing tax deductible?
The interest portion of equipment loan payments is deductible as a business expense. The equipment itself qualifies for depreciation or Section 179 immediate expensing if eligible. Lease payments on true operating leases deduct fully as business expense. Capital lease structures (EFA $1 buyout) get depreciation treatment.
How does Section 179 work?
Section 179 lets you deduct up to $1.16 million (2024 limit, indexed annually) of qualifying equipment in the year placed in service, rather than depreciating over 5 to 7 years. Equipment must be placed in service before December 31 of the tax year, used more than 50 percent for business, and financed through a qualifying structure (loan or EFA, not operating lease).
Can I finance used equipment?
Yes. Used equipment financing is a major category, with most lenders willing to fund equipment up to 5 to 10 years old. Older equipment requires specialty programs with shorter terms and higher rates. Authorized refurbished equipment from OEM-direct programs often qualifies for new-equipment-equivalent terms.
Do I need a personal guarantee?
Most equipment loans for small and mid-size businesses require personal guarantee from the principals. Large established businesses with strong financials sometimes get non-recourse structures. Startup and credit-challenged applications always require personal guarantee, often with spouse co-sign.

Cost stack: what total ownership actually includes

The equipment purchase price is one line on the financed amount. The actual cost of ownership over the life of a soft pull deal includes the items below. Buyers who only budget for the purchase price often hit cash-flow surprise within the first 12 months.

  • Late payment fees and penalties. Late fees of 5 to 10 percent of payment if more than 10 days late. Default interest of 4 to 6 points may apply. Worth knowing before signing.
  • Storage and security infrastructure. Indoor storage, security systems, and theft-prevention measures. Particularly important for landscape, construction, and small equipment frequently stored outdoors and at job sites.
  • Operating consumables. Recurring costs not included in the equipment purchase: fuel, fluids, filters, tools, parts. Equipment-specific.
  • Tooling and accessories. Cutting tools, attachments, fixtures, and accessories specific to the equipment. Often quoted separately from base equipment. Can run 10 to 40 percent of equipment cost.
  • Equipment purchase price. Base equipment price as quoted by the dealer. Negotiable, especially on used equipment and end-of-quarter new equipment.
  • Operator training. Manufacturer-provided or third-party operator training. Runs $1,500 to $25,000 depending on equipment complexity. OSHA-compliant training required on many categories.
  • Installation and commissioning. Site preparation, electrical, plumbing, leveling, calibration, and operational commissioning. Runs 5 to 25 percent of equipment price depending on equipment category.
  • Insurance premiums. Commercial equipment insurance with lender named as loss payee. Annual premiums run 1 to 5 percent of equipment value depending on coverage and equipment category.

What if something changes mid-term

Equipment loans run for 36 to 96 months. Things change. The patterns below cover the situations that come up most often during the loan term and how they typically resolve.

Business ownership change during loan term

Most equipment loans are personally guaranteed and assumable with lender consent during ownership change. The new owner submits an application similar to the original; the lender reviews and either consents or requires payoff.

Borrower cash flow stress mid-term

Contact the lender BEFORE missing a payment. Most lenders work with borrowers in temporary stress through extension, deferral, or restructure. Missed payments without contact trigger default mechanics that limit options.

Lender becomes difficult to work with

Most equipment loans are assumable or assignable with lender consent. Refinancing to a different lender is the more common path. Document the issues clearly; the situation rarely improves and the alternatives exist.

Personal guarantee called on default

Personal guarantee makes the principal personally liable for the debt if the business defaults. Working with the lender on workout or restructure is the preferable path. Personal bankruptcy is a real consequence of unresolved default with personal guarantee.
