Skip payment programs let seasonal businesses skip 1 to 3 months of payments each year during off-season. Common in agriculture, landscaping, snow removal, and tourism-dependent industries.

How skip payments work

The lender pre-defines which months you will not make payments. Common patterns:

  • Agriculture: Skip January, February, March; pay April through December
  • Landscaping: Skip December, January, February
  • Snow removal: Skip June, July, August
  • Marine and tourism: Skip November through February

The total number of payments does not change. If you have a 60-month loan and skip 3 months per year, you still pay 60 payments but spread across 75 months. The maturity date extends to absorb the skipped months.

How it differs from deferred payment

Deferred payment shifts the start of payments. Skip payment shifts specific months every year. Deferred is one-time; skip is recurring.

The math

On a $150,000 loan at 9% APR with 60 nominal months and 3 skip months per year, the lender either:

  • Extends the term to 75 months total (60 paying months + 15 skip months) and keeps the payment the same, or
  • Keeps the term at 60 months total (so paying months are 45) and increases each payment by roughly 33% to compress 60 months of principal-and-interest into 45

Most lenders use the extended-term approach. Confirm which structure the lender is offering.

Eligibility

Skip payment programs are generally available for:

  • Businesses with 2+ years operating in a documented seasonal industry
  • Revenue history showing clear off-season pattern
  • A or B credit tier
  • Equipment used primarily for seasonal work (snowplows, tractors, irrigation, harvesters)

Year-round businesses typically do not qualify even if they want the cash-flow benefit. The lender wants to see that the skip months align with documented revenue gaps.

Documentation needed

To support a skip payment structure, lenders often request:

  • Two years of monthly revenue data
  • Business description confirming seasonal nature
  • Sometimes industry-specific documentation (state crop reports, snow event records, tourism season dates)

What can go wrong

Skip months are fixed and inflexible. If your business cycle shifts (new contracts, geographic expansion, climate variation), the skip months may not align with reality. You cannot rearrange them mid-term in most agreements.

Payment shock at season start. Coming out of three skip months, the first paying month feels heavy. Plan cash for that month carefully.

Total cost is slightly higher than a standard term. The lender is taking on more cash-flow risk. They price for it.

Refinancing is harder. A loan with embedded skip months is structured differently from a standard amortization. Refinancing into a non-skip structure may require resetting the schedule.

Some operators prefer a standard amortization and build a savings buffer during paying months to cover off-season payments. This approach:

  • Costs less over the full term (no skip-payment premium)
  • Requires discipline to set aside the savings
  • Gives you flexibility if cash flow changes year to year

For businesses with consistent seasonality and limited cash-management bandwidth, skip payments make sense. For businesses with stronger cash discipline, the buffer approach is often cheaper.

What underwriters weigh on this

Lenders evaluating an application affected by this topic look at a small set of factors that drive most of the decision. The four below are the ones that move the rate.

  • Time in business. The single most weighted factor for most equipment lenders. Two years in business opens up the full program menu. Under one year narrows the lender pool and often requires larger down payment.
  • Personal credit of principals. For owners with 20 percent or more equity, personal FICO drives both the available program and the rate. The pull is soft at prequalification, hard at formal application with the chosen lender.
  • Owner background and depth. Years of related industry experience, prior ownership of similar equipment, and any documented success operating the asset class affect underwriting. New entrants to a class price differently from established operators expanding within their lane.
  • Documented backlog or pipeline. Signed contracts, outstanding purchase orders, or a documented work backlog support the application story. For service businesses in particular, a pipeline that justifies the new equipment closes deals faster than projections alone.

Document-level issues that catch borrowers

Lenders and dealers do not hide the items below. They are in the funding documents and disclosure materials. The patterns show up because the borrower did not read the language that mattered, not because the language was withheld.

Fleet vs single-unit pricing

When financing more than one unit, ask whether the lender treats it as a fleet transaction (often with better pricing) versus separate single-unit transactions. The difference can be 50 to 150 basis points on a multi-unit deal. Some lenders default to single-unit treatment unless the borrower asks for fleet structure.

Insurance lapse triggers

Lenders require physical damage insurance on the financed equipment for the life of the loan, with the lender named as loss payee. If your policy lapses, the lender places force-placed insurance at three to five times the cost of an open-market policy and bills you for it. Keep proof of insurance current with the lender.

ACH authorization scope

The funding documents authorize the lender to ACH debit your account for monthly payments. Some authorizations are limited to the regular monthly payment; others give the lender authority to debit late fees, NSF fees, or other charges. Read the ACH authorization clause and limit it where you can.

Operating lease end-of-term costs

FMV and TRAC leases include end-of-term obligations that surprise inexperienced lessees: excess wear and tear charges, return logistics, mileage or hour overages, and the fair market value buyout calculation itself. None of these are inherently bad, but knowing the rules at lease signing prevents end-of-term disputes.

What to verify before you sign

Lender funding documents reference the equipment and the transaction terms. Catching gaps between what was discussed and what is documented saves real money. The items below cover what to confirm before signing.

  • Manufacturer warranty status. On used equipment, confirm what is left of the original manufacturer warranty. Some warranties transfer with title and continue; others are tied to the original owner. The remaining warranty has dollar value and should factor into the purchase price.
  • Wear items documented. Tires, tracks, undercarriage, cutting edges, brakes. Photograph and note remaining life. These are the items that will need replacement first and that buyers under-budget for.
  • Hydraulics and ancillary systems. Full range of motion on every hydraulic function, no leaks, smooth operation, no chatter or pump whine. Hydraulic repairs on heavy equipment run into five figures fast.
  • Engine and powertrain test. Cold start, warm operation, load test if applicable. Diesel equipment in particular masks issues at warm-running temperature that surface on cold start.
  • Electrical and instrument cluster. All gauges working, all warning lights cycling correctly on key-on, no fault codes stored in the ECU. Modern equipment with electronic controls is expensive to diagnose if anything is wrong.

Funding occurs after you sign the documents and the lender verifies delivery and acceptance of the equipment. The lender wires the funds to the seller directly in most cases. Time from document signing to seller funding is typically 1 to 3 business days.
Does the dealer get the loan funds, or do I?
Funds go to the seller directly in nearly all equipment financing. The lender wires the agreed amount to the seller after you sign the acceptance documents. You never see or handle the loan funds. This protects both the lender and you from misapplication of proceeds.
Does my application count as a hard credit pull?
Prequalification through us is a soft pull with no impact on your score. When you accept a partner lender offer and proceed to formal application, the chosen lender typically runs a hard pull at that stage with your consent.
Can a startup with no revenue history finance equipment?
Limited paths, but they exist. Startup programs typically require larger down payment (15 to 30 percent), personal guarantee, and sometimes proof of contract, signed lease, or other evidence the equipment will produce revenue. Personal credit and personal financial strength carry more weight than they would for an established borrower.
What if the equipment cost on the invoice is higher than what we discussed?
