The funding statement on a crane trucks deal looks different from the dealer quote. The dealer quote highlights the equipment and configuration. The funding statement breaks out every dollar the lender is financing, in the order the lender lists them. Reading both side by side at signing is the discipline that prevents post-funding surprise.
Base equipment. The unit itself, in the configuration the seller is offering.
For crane trucks, base pricing typically runs $280K to $392K depending on configuration, year, hours, and condition.
Two machines with identical model numbers can price 25 percent apart based on hours, attachments installed, and the condition of wear items at the time of sale.
Attachments, options, and add-ons.
Buckets, thumbs, couplers, undercarriage upgrades, and operator-station options show up as separate lines on the bill of sale. Each is financeable. Attachments alone can add 10 to 25 percent to a base machine price; specify which attachments are included in the financed transaction and which are buyer-supplied.
Delivery, setup, and training.
Delivery and setup typically add 1 to 4 percent of base price; training, where the dealer or manufacturer sends a representative on site, runs $1,500 to $5,000. Both are financeable and both are negotiable.
Sales tax, title, and registration.
On titled equipment, sales tax, title transfer, and registration fees roll into the financed amount and the lender pays them at closing. Plate fees and apportioned registrations for interstate use are separate and recur. The lender holds the title and you carry the registration; expect a 30 to 90 day window between funding and your physical title or plates.
Extended warranty, service contract, and consumables.
Powertrain and full-machine warranties on heavy equipment range from $1,500 to $15,000 depending on hour limits and term. Worth bundling when parts and labor exposure on the asset class is high. Decide before signing whether to roll the warranty in.

The capacity-doubling buyer
An operator adding a second shift, a second line, or duplicate equipment to meet existing demand. Cleanest story to underwrite because the demand is already documented in the historical revenue. Loan term often matches the equipment useful life rather than being shortened against perceived risk.
The expansion buyer
A business in growth mode, opening a second location or a second line, with revenue from the existing operation supporting the new debt. Lenders weigh the existing operation strength against the unproven contribution from the new unit; deals usually close on the strength of the existing book.
The non-profit buyer
A 501(c)(3) or government-affiliated entity buying equipment for mission delivery. A subset of our partner lenders runs dedicated non-profit programs with different rate and term structures. Tax-exempt status changes some of the conventional financing math.
The contractor with a signed job
A buyer with an executed contract that the equipment will fulfill. Lenders sometimes use the contract as supporting documentation, particularly for newer businesses. Expect to share the contract value, term, and counterparty.
The factors that move the rate on crane trucks financing
When our partner lenders evaluate crane trucks, they price the borrower against five factors that have stable weights across the industry. The equipment itself is the easier part of the file. The borrower factors below are where the actual underwriting happens.
- Bank statement analysis. Three to twelve months of business bank statements. Lenders look at average daily balance, monthly deposit count, NSF activity, and overall cash flow stability. This is where seasonal businesses get fairly priced if they have the records.
- Documented backlog or pipeline. Signed contracts, outstanding purchase orders, or a documented work backlog support the application story. For service businesses in particular, a pipeline that justifies the new equipment closes deals faster than projections alone.
- Existing debt service. Lenders look at total monthly debt obligations against cash flow. Adding a new payment that pushes the debt service coverage ratio below 1.20 typically requires additional support or a larger down payment.
- Geographic operating territory. Where the equipment will operate matters. Some lenders prefer single-state operation; others price interstate or cross-border use differently. The lender match changes if the equipment will operate outside the home state regularly.
- Owner background and depth. Years of related industry experience, prior ownership of similar equipment, and any documented success operating the asset class affect underwriting. New entrants to a class price differently from established operators expanding within their lane.
Before you sign on crane trucks: what to verify
Lenders fund off the bill of sale and the seller representation. If the equipment shows up different from what is documented, the loan still funded and the discrepancy is yours to resolve. The walk below catches the issues before signing, when negotiation is still open and the cost of a fix is the seller side.
- Pre-funding photo set. Take a comprehensive photo set of the equipment at the time of purchase signing: serial number, hour meter, condition of major systems, attachments, and any documented damage. This photo set goes into your records and into the lender file if requested.
- Operator manuals and documentation. Get the operator manual, service manual, and any parts catalog at the time of purchase. Replacements are sometimes available from the manufacturer but slow and expensive. Documentation is part of the asset value.
- Comparable sales data. Pricing checked against recent comparable sales from auction sites, dealer listings, and trade publications. A unit priced 15 percent above market signals either a premium configuration or a seller hoping the buyer does not check.
- Recall and campaign status. Manufacturer recalls and service campaigns sometimes go uncompleted on used equipment. Verify outstanding recalls before purchase; some are mandatory and prevent the equipment from being registered or operated in certain jurisdictions until completed.
- Service history complete. Maintenance records back to first owner where possible. Gaps in service history reduce both lender comfort and resale value.
- Software and license transfer. For equipment with embedded software (modern control systems, telematics, diagnostic), confirm the software licenses transfer to the new owner. Some manufacturer software is tied to original-purchaser-only; the second-hand owner can lose access to telematics, fault-code reading, or update streams.
The post-funding issues we see most on crane trucks
The patterns below are not unique to crane trucks. They are the standard places where equipment finance transactions surprise the borrower post-funding. Each is preventable at the application or document-review stage.
Operating lease end-of-term costs
FMV and TRAC leases include end-of-term obligations that surprise inexperienced lessees: excess wear and tear charges, return logistics, mileage or hour overages, and the fair market value buyout calculation itself. None of these are inherently bad, but knowing the rules at lease signing prevents end-of-term disputes.
Padded equipment invoice
Some dealers will list installation, delivery, or extended warranty as separate line items on the invoice and finance them into the loan. That is fine if you know it is happening and want those items rolled in. It becomes a problem when the borrower thinks they are financing the equipment at $100,000 and the actual loan principal is $112,500 because of soft-cost items added to the invoice.
Down payment timing
Your down payment is typically due at funding, not application. Lenders verify the source of down payment funds for transactions above certain thresholds. Wiring down payment money from a personal account into the business account immediately before funding can flag the deal for additional documentation.
Vendor financing disguised as direct
Some equipment dealers present vendor-arranged financing as the only path, when independent equipment lenders would beat the rate by 1 to 3 points for the same borrower. Always get at least one independent quote before accepting dealer financing on a transaction over $50,000.

Cost stack: what total ownership actually includes
The equipment purchase price is one line on the financed amount. The actual cost of ownership over the life of a crane trucks deal includes the items below. Buyers who only budget for the purchase price often hit cash-flow surprise within the first 12 months.
- Installation and commissioning. Site preparation, electrical, plumbing, leveling, calibration, and operational commissioning. Runs 5 to 25 percent of equipment price depending on equipment category.
- Software licenses. CAM, design, control, and operational software. Often subscription-based with annual renewal. Can run $5,000 to $50,000+ per seat depending on equipment category.
- Equipment purchase price. Base equipment price as quoted by the dealer. Negotiable, especially on used equipment and end-of-quarter new equipment.
- Late payment fees and penalties. Late fees of 5 to 10 percent of payment if more than 10 days late. Default interest of 4 to 6 points may apply. Worth knowing before signing.

- Personal property tax (where applicable). Annual personal property tax assessed by counties in many states. Runs 0.5 to 3 percent of assessed value annually.
- Pre-payment penalties. Standard early-payoff penalty: 3 percent of payoff in year one declining to zero by year three. Or flat fee of $500 to $2,000. Varies by lender.
What if something changes mid-term
Equipment loans run for 36 to 96 months. Things change. The patterns below cover the situations that come up most often during the loan term and how they typically resolve.
Equipment serial number does not match UCC filing
Identify the error (dealer substitution, lender filing error, etc.) and resolve before subsequent financing. The UCC needs to match the actual collateral for enforceability. Lender amendment of the UCC handles this in most cases.
Equipment lien still showing after loan payoff
Lender is required to terminate the UCC-1 within a defined window after payoff (varies by state). If termination has not occurred, request a UCC termination statement from the lender. Borrower can sometimes file UCC termination directly if lender is unresponsive.
Borrower discovers equipment was misrepresented at sale
The lender funded based on the bill of sale, not the equipment condition. Disputes between buyer and seller after funding are between those parties. The loan obligation continues regardless. Independent pre-purchase inspection prevents most of these situations.
Lender becomes difficult to work with
Most equipment loans are assumable or assignable with lender consent. Refinancing to a different lender is the more common path. Document the issues clearly; the situation rarely improves and the alternatives exist.
