Base equipment. The unit itself, in the configuration the seller is offering.

Two units with similar model and mileage can price 15 percent apart depending on spec, axle configuration, and the title status at the time of sale.
Attachments, options, and add-ons.
Sleeper packages, axle configurations, lift gates, refrigeration units, and aftermarket installations show up as separate lines. Each is financeable. On a fleet purchase, the upfit configuration drives much of the total spread between two otherwise-identical units.
Delivery, setup, and training.
Delivery and setup typically add 1 to 4 percent of base price; training, where the dealer or manufacturer sends a representative on site, runs $1,500 to $5,000. Both are financeable and both are negotiable.
Sales tax, title, and registration.
On titled equipment, sales tax, title transfer, and registration fees roll into the financed amount and the lender pays them at closing. Plate fees and apportioned registrations for interstate use are separate and recur. The lender holds the title and you carry the registration; expect a 30 to 90 day window between funding and your physical title or plates.
Extended warranty, service contract, and consumables.
Optional but common. Pricing typically runs $1,000 to $10,000 depending on equipment cost and coverage. Financeable. Decide whether to roll the warranty in before you sign the funding documents, not after.

The grant-leveraged buyer

The non-profit buyer
A 501(c)(3) or government-affiliated entity buying equipment for mission delivery. A subset of our partner lenders runs dedicated non-profit programs with different rate and term structures. Tax-exempt status changes some of the conventional financing math.
The first-time owner
An owner-operator who has been working for a previous employer or as a contractor and is now buying the equipment to run their own book. Programs exist for this profile but expect 10 to 20 percent down, personal guarantees, and proof of relevant work history.
The post-restructure operator
A business that has been through a workout, settlement, or bankruptcy in the last 24 to 60 months. Programs exist with the right lender, usually at higher rate, with larger down payment, and tied to a personal guarantee from a principal with current clean credit.
What underwriting weighs on heavy-duty truck lifts deals
The five factors below drive most of the rate variance we see across heavy-duty truck lifts applications. Lenders weigh them in roughly this order and price the deal off the combination. Your application is a story the underwriter reads against these five factors.
- Bank statement analysis. Three to twelve months of business bank statements. Lenders look at average daily balance, monthly deposit count, NSF activity, and overall cash flow stability. This is where seasonal businesses get fairly priced if they have the records.
- Business credit profile. D&B Paydex, Experian Intelliscore, and trade references from current vendors. Stronger business credit reduces personal-guarantee scope and improves the rate.
- Use of equipment. Will the asset generate revenue immediately, will it replace an existing producing asset, or is it additive capacity. Revenue-replacement deals close most easily.
- Existing debt service. Lenders look at total monthly debt obligations against cash flow. Adding a new payment that pushes the debt service coverage ratio below 1.20 typically requires additional support or a larger down payment.
- Equipment as collateral. The equipment itself secures the loan. Asset class, age, condition, configuration, and resale market depth all factor into how lenders advance against the cost.
Diligence on heavy-duty truck lifts: the items that matter
Equipment financing on heavy-duty truck lifts closes cleanly when the pre-purchase walk catches the items below. When it does not, the issues surface post-funding, and the lender owns nothing of the resolution. Read the seller representation against the items below before signing.
- Operator manuals and documentation. Get the operator manual, service manual, and any parts catalog at the time of purchase. Replacements are sometimes available from the manufacturer but slow and expensive. Documentation is part of the asset value.
- Comparable sales data. Pricing checked against recent comparable sales from auction sites, dealer listings, and trade publications. A unit priced 15 percent above market signals either a premium configuration or a seller hoping the buyer does not check.
- Manufacturer warranty status. On used equipment, confirm what is left of the original manufacturer warranty. Some warranties transfer with title and continue; others are tied to the original owner. The remaining warranty has dollar value and should factor into the purchase price.
- Wear items documented. Tires, tracks, undercarriage, cutting edges, brakes. Photograph and note remaining life. These are the items that will need replacement first and that buyers under-budget for.
- Hours-meter or odometer history. Beyond the current reading, confirm the historical pattern of use. A unit with 4,000 hours from regular daily use is different from a unit with 4,000 hours from intermittent project work. Service records, when available, document the use pattern.
- Electrical and instrument cluster. All gauges working, all warning lights cycling correctly on key-on, no fault codes stored in the ECU. Modern equipment with electronic controls is expensive to diagnose if anything is wrong.
The post-funding issues we see most on heavy-duty truck lifts
The patterns below are not unique to heavy-duty truck lifts. They are the standard places where equipment finance transactions surprise the borrower post-funding. Each is preventable at the application or document-review stage.
Co-borrower vs guarantor distinction
Some lenders require a co-borrower on the loan rather than a guarantor. The legal and tax implications differ materially. A co-borrower has direct payment obligation; a guarantor only steps in if the primary defaults. Make sure your funding documents reflect the role you intended to play, especially if multiple owners are involved.
Tax exemption not claimed at funding
If your equipment qualifies for a sales-tax exemption (manufacturing, agriculture, certain non-profit uses), the exemption certificate must be submitted at the time of the purchase to apply. Submitting it after the fact often means filing for a refund with the state, which takes months. Confirm the exemption status before signing.
Add-on funding within the deal
During the application or document review stage, some borrowers add items (extended warranty, training, additional configuration) without realizing the loan amount is re-quoted at the higher figure. Each addition can change the rate, term, and approval terms. Confirm the final loan amount before signing rather than tracking changes piecemeal.
Personal guarantee scope
On most equipment loans under $250,000, owners with 20 percent or more equity sign personal guarantees. Read the guarantee language. Some guarantees are limited to the specific loan; others are continuing and cover any future borrowing from the same lender. Limit the guarantee to the specific transaction when possible.
Timeline expectations
What actually happens day-by-day, from application to equipment in service. Most buyers underestimate one or two of these steps; knowing them up front prevents surprises.

California off-road diesel equipment requires CARB compliance verification. The DOORS database lookup is same-day; full compliance certification for transferred equipment runs days.
Insurance binder issuance

Commercial auto and equipment insurance binders typically issue same-day from existing carriers. New policies for new businesses can run 2-5 business days to bind.
Cost stack: what total ownership actually includes
The equipment purchase price is one line on the financed amount. The actual cost of ownership over the life of a heavy-duty truck lifts deal includes the items below. Buyers who only budget for the purchase price often hit cash-flow surprise within the first 12 months.
- Software licenses. CAM, design, control, and operational software. Often subscription-based with annual renewal. Can run $5,000 to $50,000+ per seat depending on equipment category.
- Delivery and freight. Equipment delivery from dealer to operating site. Runs 1 to 5 percent of equipment price on standard equipment, higher on heavy or oversized equipment requiring permits and escorts.
- Storage and security infrastructure. Indoor storage, security systems, and theft-prevention measures. Particularly important for landscape, construction, and small equipment frequently stored outdoors and at job sites.
- Pre-payment penalties. Standard early-payoff penalty: 3 percent of payoff in year one declining to zero by year three. Or flat fee of $500 to $2,000. Varies by lender.
- End-of-term residual or buyout. Lease structures: fair market value buyout at term end (FMV lease) or stated residual amount (TRAC lease). Loan/EFA structures: $1 buyout or no buyout. Plan for this from day one on lease structures.
- Equipment purchase price. Base equipment price as quoted by the dealer. Negotiable, especially on used equipment and end-of-quarter new equipment.
- Operating consumables. Recurring costs not included in the equipment purchase: fuel, fluids, filters, tools, parts. Equipment-specific.
- Extended warranty or service contract. Optional but common. Annual cost runs 5 to 15 percent of equipment price on production equipment, 1 to 3 percent on commercial vehicles. Financeable with the equipment.
What if something changes mid-term
Equipment loans run for 36 to 96 months. Things change. The patterns below cover the situations that come up most often during the loan term and how they typically resolve.
Pre-payment penalty obstacles to refinancing
Calculate the breakeven: penalty cost vs. interest savings on refinanced rate. Common breakeven is 12-18 months. If you expect to keep the equipment 24+ more months at lower rate, the penalty usually pays back.
Equipment lien still showing after loan payoff
Lender is required to terminate the UCC-1 within a defined window after payoff (varies by state). If termination has not occurred, request a UCC termination statement from the lender. Borrower can sometimes file UCC termination directly if lender is unresponsive.
Equipment damage during the loan term
Insurance proceeds pay off the loan balance or fund replacement equipment with lender consent. The loan does not cancel automatically with the equipment loss; coordination with lender is required.
Borrower discovers equipment was misrepresented at sale
The lender funded based on the bill of sale, not the equipment condition. Disputes between buyer and seller after funding are between those parties. The loan obligation continues regardless. Independent pre-purchase inspection prevents most of these situations.
