Equipment finance is subject to KYC/AML but at a different risk profile than retail banking. Most equipment finance transactions are clearly business equipment for clearly business purposes, which lowers AML risk. KYC documentation is standard:

Can I finance equipment with no time in business?
Yes, through startup-specific programs. These require strong principal credit (typically 700+ FICO), verifiable industry experience, and larger down payments (15 to 25 percent). New-authority trucking, first-time shop owners, and new medical practices all have dedicated startup programs.
Can I refinance an equipment loan?
Yes. Equipment refinancing is common when rates have dropped meaningfully since the original loan, when the equipment has built equity supporting cash-out, or when the original lender relationship has issues. Standard equipment refi is similar to a new equipment loan with the existing equipment as collateral.
Can I pay off my equipment loan early?
Yes, but many equipment loans carry pre-payment penalties in the first 12 to 36 months. Standard structures range from 3 percent of the payoff in year one declining to zero by year three. Some loans are open pre-payment with no penalty. Read the contract before signing if early payoff is likely.
What documents do I need to apply?
Driver license, voided business check, last 3 months bank statements, and a quote or invoice for the equipment. App-only programs (under $150K typically) require this much. Full-financials programs add 2 years of business tax returns and a recent P&L.
How is interest calculated on equipment loans?
Most equipment loans use simple interest amortization. Each payment includes principal and interest portions, with the interest portion declining as the balance amortizes. EFA structures may use rate-factor pricing instead of stated APR; the dollar cost is similar but the math is different.
What is an app-only program?
App-only means the lender approves the deal based on a credit application without requiring full business financials. Typically capped at $150,000 to $250,000 transaction size depending on lender. Decisions are faster (often same-day) and documentation is minimal. Above the app-only threshold, full financials are required.

How we route the decision

The financing structure that fits depends on the actual situation. Below are the most common decision branches we walk through with buyers, in plain "if X, then Y" form.

If You are planning a Section 179 election close to year-end
Then Confirm placed-in-service date can be hit before December 31. Equipment ordered but not delivered/commissioned does not qualify for current-year §179, regardless of payment status.
If You plan to bundle attachments with the base equipment
Then Get them all on a single bill of sale and single paper. Bundled financing typically costs 50 to 100 basis points less than financing the base unit and adding attachments separately.
If You are a startup with strong principal credit and industry experience
Then Apply to startup-specific programs that recognize principal credit and experience as substitutes for entity history. Expect higher down payment but a real path to approval.
If Your business operates across multiple states
Then Confirm where to file the UCC-1 (state of incorporation vs state of equipment location). Standard practice files in state of incorporation; check with counsel on edge cases.
If You are buying equipment that will be sub-rented or leased to others
Then Confirm at application. Sub-rental changes underwriting analysis (revenue stability, asset risk) and may require a different program than owner-account use.

Lease end-of-term decision deadline
60 to 90 days before term end
Most lease structures require notice of intent (purchase, return, or renew) 60-90 days before term end. Missing the deadline can trigger automatic renewal or other default consequences.
Wire transfer cutoff times
Typically 2-3pm PT / 5-6pm ET
After cutoff, wire processes next business day. Late-Friday signings often delay funding until Monday or Tuesday.
CARB compliance verification (California)
1 to 5 business days
California off-road diesel equipment requires CARB compliance verification. The DOORS database lookup is same-day; full compliance certification for transferred equipment runs days.
Placed-in-service date documentation
Same-day as commissioning
For Section 179 and depreciation purposes, the placed-in-service date is when the equipment is delivered, installed, and operationally ready. Document this date carefully for tax purposes.
Title transfer on titled equipment
1 to 4 weeks
Title transfer through state DMV adds weeks to closing on titled equipment. Out-of-state transfers run on the longer end. Title escrow accelerates this in many cases.
Apportioned plate registration (trucking)
2 to 4 weeks
New-authority trucking operators need apportioned plates before crossing state lines. Plan this into the funding timeline; temporary trip permits bridge the gap at higher per-state cost.
