Deferred Payment is A loan structure where the first payment is delayed (typically 30-90 days) after equipment delivery.

Deferred payment structures delay the first payment on equipment financing by 30, 60, or 90 days after the equipment is delivered. The deferral gives the borrower time to deploy the equipment and start generating revenue before the first payment comes due.

How it works

Standard equipment loan: first payment due 30 days after funding. Deferred-payment loan: first payment due 60-90 days after funding. Interest still accrues during the deferral period; it is either added to the loan principal (you finance the interest) or paid up front along with the down payment.

When deferred payment makes sense

  • Equipment needs installation, configuration, or training before generating revenue (CNC machines, large medical imaging, custom production lines)
  • Seasonal businesses where the equipment generates revenue during a specific season
  • New business startup where initial revenue ramp-up takes weeks or months
  • Construction projects where the equipment funds a project that bills 60+ days out

The trade-off

You pay slightly more total interest (interest on interest if accrued and added to principal). The cash-flow benefit is meaningful for businesses that genuinely need the runway; if you can pay from day 30, taking deferred costs you money without benefit.

Variations

  • True deferral: no payments for X days, then standard amortization begins
  • Interest-only deferral: interest-only payments during the deferral, then standard amortization
  • Skip-payment hybrid: deferred start + skip-payment program for ongoing seasonality

Then Apply to startup-specific programs that recognize principal credit and experience as substitutes for entity history. Expect higher down payment but a real path to approval.
If You will operate the equipment more than 50 percent for business
Then You qualify for Section 179 and bonus depreciation on the business-use percentage. Below 50 percent business use disqualifies from §179 entirely.
If You plan to cycle equipment every 36 to 48 months
Then A true operating lease with FMV residual often beats loan or EFA structures. The lower payment over a shorter term, with return option at the end, fits the use case.

Full underwriting on complex deals

Larger transactions ($500K+) or specialty deals (medical imaging, aerospace, mining) often require deeper underwriting. Plan funding date 2-3 weeks out for these.
Apportioned plate registration (trucking)
2 to 4 weeks
New-authority trucking operators need apportioned plates before crossing state lines. Plan this into the funding timeline; temporary trip permits bridge the gap at higher per-state cost.
Decision to document signing
1 to 3 business days
Borrower review and signing of credit documents and personal guarantee. Most delays here are borrower-side rather than lender-side.
Equipment delivery and inspection
1 day to 16 weeks
Wide range depending on equipment type. In-stock equipment delivers in days. Custom-configured manufacturing equipment runs 8-16 weeks. Imported equipment runs 12-24 weeks.
Insurance binder issuance
Same-day to 24 hours
Commercial auto and equipment insurance binders typically issue same-day from existing carriers. New policies for new businesses can run 2-5 business days to bind.
Wire transfer cutoff times
Typically 2-3pm PT / 5-6pm ET
After cutoff, wire processes next business day. Late-Friday signings often delay funding until Monday or Tuesday.

Cost stack: what total ownership actually includes

The equipment purchase price is one line on the financed amount. The actual cost of ownership over the life of a deferred payment deal includes the items below. Buyers who only budget for the purchase price often hit cash-flow surprise within the first 12 months.

  • Software licenses. CAM, design, control, and operational software. Often subscription-based with annual renewal. Can run $5,000 to $50,000+ per seat depending on equipment category.
  • Equipment purchase price. Base equipment price as quoted by the dealer. Negotiable, especially on used equipment and end-of-quarter new equipment.
  • Title transfer and registration. Titled equipment (trucks, trailers, some construction equipment) requires title transfer and registration. State-specific fees from $50 to $500+.
  • Documentation and dealer fees. Lender doc fee runs $150 to $1,500. Dealer doc fee varies. Both may roll into financed amount or pay at signing.
  • Late payment fees and penalties. Late fees of 5 to 10 percent of payment if more than 10 days late. Default interest of 4 to 6 points may apply. Worth knowing before signing.
  • Operator training. Manufacturer-provided or third-party operator training. Runs $1,500 to $25,000 depending on equipment complexity. OSHA-compliant training required on many categories.
  • Operating consumables. Recurring costs not included in the equipment purchase: fuel, fluids, filters, tools, parts. Equipment-specific.
  • Sales or use tax. State and local sales tax on the equipment. Rolls into financed amount in most states. Manufacturing and qualifying exemptions reduce or eliminate this in many states.
