## Summary

Party that initiates the loan, gathers docs, and submits to a lender.

## Content

Originator is the lender that originally creates and funds a loan. In equipment finance, the originator handles application intake, underwriting, document preparation, and initial funding. After origination, the loan may stay with the originator (portfolio loan) or be sold to another lender or securitization (in which case a separate servicer takes over ongoing administration).
Originators in equipment finance

Banks that originate their own equipment loans (Stearns Bank, First Business Financial, regional banks)
Independent finance companies (Balboa Capital, Crest Capital, North Mill)
OEM captives (Caterpillar Financial, John Deere Financial)
Marketplace lenders (Currency Capital and similar)
SBA-approved lenders for SBA-guaranteed loans

Why this matters

The originator handles your initial application experience
The originator sets the loan terms at origination
If the loan is sold, your day-to-day contact changes (but not the loan terms)
Originator quality matters for closing speed, documentation accuracy, and pre-funding experience
